Air Conditioners (AC) are designed to keep your space cool and comfortable by removing excess humidity and hot air. However, sometimes your house may feel humid even with the AC running. If you find yourself in this situation, here are four possible culprits.
The AC’s Air Ducts Are Leaking
If your ductwork has holes or gaps, the cool and conditioned air from the AC will escape before reaching its intended destination. Further, the leaks will also let in unconditioned air into the ducts. The humid air mixes with the conditioned air, “diluting” it and making it less effective at dehumidifying. Ductwork issues are rather easy to diagnose as they are mostly characterized by loud whistling sounds in the AC.
Your Unit Is Incorrectly Sized
Naturally, the larger an AC, the more powerful its fans and the faster it can cool a room. But if the AC is too large compared to the house, it will cool the air before removing humidity. Similarly, an AC unit that’s too small won’t be able to dehumidify the air fully.
If your air conditioner is cooling but doesn’t remove humidity, there’s a high chance that it’s not the right size. Ideally, consult an HVAC professional to evaluate your home’s square footage and insulation levels and recommend an optimal AC size.
Refrigerant Issues
Low refrigerant levels or refrigerant leaks in your system may be the reason why your house is so humid with the AC on. Generally, refrigerants absorb heat from indoor air. If the refrigerant levels are low or the refrigerant is leaking, it won’t be able to cool the air properly. If the air is not sufficiently cooled, the humidity will remain high.
Clogged Drain Line
The moisture removed by the AC from the air collects in a container called a drain pan. From the drain pan, the condensate is drained away through the drain line. If the drain line is clogged with debris, the condensate can go back up into the AC. Depending on its volume, it may drip into your home and add to the humidity problems.
